Latent Classes of Criminal Intent Associated with Criminal Behaviour

چکیده
Background: This study aimed to examine the number of latent classes of criminal intent that exist among prisoners and to look at the associations with recidivism, number of police arrests, type of offending (robbery, violent offences, murder, and multiple offences), and age. Participants and Procedure: Latent class analysis was used to identify homogeneous subgroups of prisoners based on their responses to the 10 questions reflecting criminal intent. Participants were 309 male recidivistic prisoners incarcerated in a Maximum Security Prison. Multinomial logistic regression was used to interpret the nature of the latent classes, or groups, by estimating the association between recidivism and latent classes of criminal intent while controlling for offence type (robbery, violent offences, murder, and multiple offences), number of arrests, and age. Results: The best fitting latent class model was a three-class solution: ‘High criminal intent’ (49.3%), ‘Intermediate criminal intent’ (41.3%), and ‘Low criminal intent’ (9.4%). The latent classes were differentially related to the external variables (recidivism, violent offences, and age). Conclusions: Criminal intent is best explained by three homogenous classes that appear to represent an underlying continuum. Future work is needed to identify whether these distinct classes of criminal intent may predict engagement in various types of criminal behaviour.

Group-Based criminal trajectory analysis using cross-validation criteria
In this paper, we discuss the challenge of determining the number of classes in a family of finite mixture models with the intent of improving the specification of latent class models for criminal trajectories. We argue that the traditional method of using either the Proc Traj or Mplus package to compute and maximize the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) is problematic: Proc Traj and Mplus d...

Due to the absence of a reliable and valid measure of criminal social identity to be used with juvenile offenders in Pakistan, the focus of the first empirical chapter was to translate the self-report Measure of Criminal Social Identity (MCSI) into Urdu with the aim of testing the construct validity, dimensionality, incremental validity, and composite reliability of the measure in a sample of j...

Crime which forms the nature of criminal law is congregate of actus Reus and mens rea (in most crimes) and it is crucial that law consider the conduct criminal. In other words occurrence of criminal conduct with mens rea (except strict liability) and also occurrence of wanted result amounts to completed crime. But we are not always encountered with completed crime and sometimes conducts are c...

PURPOSE The purpose of this paper is to explore how judges perceive High Functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorders (hfASDs) and the disorders' effects on an offender's ability to formulate criminal intent and control behaviour. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH Semi-structured interviews on topics related to offenders with hfASDs were conducted with 21 California Superior Court Judges. A coding schem...
